my soldering iron isnt powerful enough to heat up the plate on the back of my strat and it is a wierd place to solder anyway. Is there any other place i can stick that i can ground that wire?

You should probably get a better soldering iron. :) The wire does need to be grounded to the claw (plate), as it basically grounds the bridge, strings, etc.

Scratch it with a screwdriver first then melt the solder onto it in a blob. You can attach the wire to the blob then :)
