Dave has covered it - maybe you can get a flat-blade screwdriver between the nut and the knob ( :eek: ), and lever it off without damaging the guitar? WD40 is OK going on, but makes it hard to refinish if it gets on the body, and it doesn't like glue.

Just use very little, and you'll be fine...
