Is the shaft that the tone knob was on made of metal? If so, pry away - you shouldn't hurt anything. A little WD-40 wouldn't hurt though. I would suggest holding the guitar face down and spraying a tiny bit onto the bottom of the knob - then it should run down between the shaft and knob.
