If he's specifically after an Ibanez, I think the SZ and SA SA series guitars look cool; but otherwise, I'd recommend a different brand, like ESP or Cort.

If at first you don't succeed, you are obviously not Chuck Norris.

Look at the following brands and decide the model based on which feels and sounds best to your ear (within the price range):
Ibanez
Jackson
Charvel
ESP
Believe it or not but Yamaha guitars can kick ass too without being overly expensive... Chris Poland plays and records exclusively on a guitar that retails at about $250 - he plays everything from shred to jazz (guitarist from Megadeth's "Peace Sells..." album)

I agree, Dean makes kick ass metal guitars and they are no to expensive, Shecter Guitar reserch makes the omen series (well actually is the Diamond series) and they are pretty hot metal guitars and unexpensive too (a really good deal).
And at least but not last, Washburn has some models that work perfect for metal.
All my recomendations come from one source, I like metal, I play somehow metal stuff, and I own one guitar of each brand and most of them are IMHO good metal axes.
Check this models:
- Washburn N1 (Nuno Betancourt signature series)
- Any Dean bro, I just can say one word for them DIMEBAG.
- Any Shecter omen (6 or 7 string) if you can afford the Damien models it's cool cause they come equiped with EMG's.
Good luck.

Power corrupts. Absolute power is kinda neat.

I agree with platypus, get a dean dimebag or even the middle line of washburn, dimebag guitars just scream metal. They feel and sound awesome. you cant beat the tone. the necks are fast and easy action. and they look cool as hell. I got two of em and wouldnt trade em for the world!!! :D :D :D
My gear:Washburn 333Dimebolt, Washburn2stStealth, Jackson Dinky, EpiphoneSG, Fender DR Heartfeld 5 string Bass, ESP LTD Bass, Pearl Export Drums, Shure mics, Peavey Bass amps, Crate guitar amps

I'd say look at some of the Peavey V-series guitars...I really like them.
