Barre Chord help!!

Help me!!! i am just new at the guitar and i cant seem to get the barre chords like Ab or Abm.
can you help me!!! i am useing an acoustic guitar and i am not sure what gauge of strings. well if any one can help me please do!!! ;)

ok. here goes. if you are using standard tuning, which i'm assuming it goes like this:

B---3-----2----
G---3-----3----
D---3-----3----
A---1-----1----
E---X-----X----

Ab is a really strange chord for a beginner to be practicing. Usually, beginners should just concentrate on the naturals.
