They say knowledge is power. So I say the more you know about music in general, including theory what not, the easier it'll be to write ditties.
Scotty West said that the more you know, the easier it'll be to satisfy yourself. I once heard someone say that its 75% knowledge, 25% inspiration when it comes to writing a song, and I believe him.
