i have no idea what the hell the "dream the dream theater sound" is, but ill tell you waht type of sound i use.

First of i use monster cables. They give you the clearest possible tone. I also use the BOSS GE-7 EQUALIZER if you want to get a tone like me shape the EQ making the first three knobs ALL at -15 then work the other four up, but not all the way up. Put the 6.4k a little bit higher than the .O in the midddle

Put all the trebel, middle, bass,(on your amp) knobs at zero and the voloume knob all the way. Use the level knob on the EQ to get the volume. Then connect the EQ to the BOSS MT-2 Distortion peadal. Put the knobs on as i say.

LEVEL:at about 11:00 o'clock
HIGH:3:00 o'clock
LOW: a tiny bit higher than 11:00 o'clock. just a hair higher
MIDDLE:7:00 o'clock
MID FREQ: SAME AS THE LOW
DISTORTION:3:00 o'clock

That should do it and make shure to use a humbucker pick-up. I use the SEYMORE DUNCAN SH-6 DISTORTION Pick-Up.

Tune down to A or C to git a nasty sound. And use the Droped-D tunning.

If you want to get the Dream Theater sound you better be willing to pay a whole lotta $$money$$. I can't remember the specifics of his setup but I do love the tone.
Ain't nothin' but a Gear thang, baby!

Whats up.

One thing that really helps tone and attitude of solo playing is having a good reverb effect. I'm not too big on wah pedals but they have their place.I also use artificial harmonics to flare up the noise and then wiggle the floyd rose bar like a mad mofo. I just have one question though.
Do you use the neck pickup to play rythym? I use the Bridge for rythym and use neck and bridge for soloing.

That might sound nice at bedroom volume levels, but try it in a band situation, and your sound will just drown completely.

As for getting a Dream Theater sound, hmmm, be prepared to spend a lot of cash. John uses a ****load of expensive gear, and I doubt you can duplicate it, while sounding convincing, with a pedal or fx processor.
Here's a pic of his rack => http://www.johnpetrucci.com/images/petrucci_rig.jpg

I was just commenting on the fact that you scoop your mid frequencies almost completely, do some reading up on equal loudness theory, and you'll see what I mean.
