edit: oops please move to 'open discussion'

hey guys i've been on guitartricks for about 4 days. anyways i've been teaching myself to play the guitar for about 8 years now. sure, i could play a few things by metallica (ie, nothing else matters, fade to black), a bunch of power chord songs (ie from greenday), a bunch of other regular chord songs (ie from oasis and smashing pumpkins), and other stuff you hear on the radio.

but i never got to a point where i was really "good" technical-wise (ie playing kirk hammet stuff and the solos from hotel california). i figured that to get to this point, i should treat myself as a relatively 'new beginner' cause i know i didn't teach myself all the small things i need to know. so i'm depending on this site to fill the gaps and more.

i've had the same gear for about 7 years now: a fender strat with a fender frontman reverb amp. this is my first guitar, and i believe this stuff is considered for beginners. hopefully i'll upgrade soon, but i don't know what is considered a 'non beginner' guitar--they all seem the same to me. i'm pretty sure i just never handled a bunch of guitars to know. so i'm looking for advice from this site on some gear too.

so far this site has been pretty good-- i don't get bored and i'm anticipating the new stuff i'll get to... my calluses are forming once again!

thanks for any help in advance!

Welcome to GT! Glad to see you signed up for Full Access, I've had it for a good year now and its great. If you want to start to get technical, I reccommend to start learning theory (if you haven't already), and I also reccommened getting a metronome and playing scales and other runs with that (if you don't already :D .)

Welcome! You will have a great time here, and it'll improve your playing out of sight .

Gt has a metronome so you don't have to buy one. While looking at a lesson, in the upper left hand part of the page, there should be a button that says metronome.

oh man, i didn't expect that many replies. thanks everyone. since i've been on guitartricks, i've been accelaterating in progress bigtime. so now know i know what a metronome is and what music theory is...i understand it's very important to know music theory and i'll check it out in the nearby future.

i've been doing some lead practice with metallica's 'one' aside from the beginner's lessons on GT. this gave my pinky a workout... my pinky feels, well, weird. after practicing the same lead over and over, the fluidity became lost a little bit, and i couldn't do the same pinky moves with other leads i've practiced previously. i want to play some more, however, i'm afraid i'll overwork my pinky (or my hand) and give myself joint problems or something. should i lay off for a bit until it goes away? discuss here...

Welcome to GT...

I'm pretty much a beginner myself when it comes to guitar.. and I know nothing of electrics.. so i did a quick search in the gear review forum and found this... Ibanez af75 Hope it helps... I'm sure you will find lots of opinions about guitars here...

Welcome. I've only been playing for about a year myself and I find that GT is wonderful place. Lots and lots of expertise and opinions here. You'll find everyone very friendly and knowledgable. Apparently you and I are very similar! I am 45 and, as noted, just really started playing. Like you, I LOVE the blues and I also bought an Ibanez AF-75. Wonderful axe. Great tone. Easy to play. You'll love it.

Anyway, good luck and enjoy! To quote Eric Stratton- Rush Chairman (From Animal House) "Try not to think of it as work, the whole idea is simply to enjoy yourself." :)

Hey man, welcome first of all. I was thinking you probably would have been better off going to this link http://www.guitartricks.com/guide.php and saving a few dollars. :)
