If you haven't got a distortion facility on your amp - you can get a very heavy sound with a distortion pedal/box, connected between the guitar and the amp.

When people talk about tone... it can be tricky... because it's all about what sounds good to the individual... What sounds "muddy" to you... may not be "muddy" to me or the next person... But the way I interpret "muddy" is that it sounds bassy, distorted... without a lot of characteristic in the high and mid range.... Try cutting your Bass waaay back... like down in the 3 or 4 range... your mids in the 5-6 range and crank your treble way up. That may not get you the tone you're looking for... But that should give you a good starting point for dialing in an Iommi sound...

The Intro of the song is a more trebley tone, then he must have used a stompbox to add bass or an octave effect for the solo. Its gonna be hard to achieve other guitarists tones on cheap amps, my best advice is to just fool around untill you get something close.

I set my amp as follows
Bass 11 o'clock
Treble 1 o'clock
Mid 2 o'clock
Gain 11 o'clock
Les paul neck pick-up selected into a distortion pedal thru a clean channel on my amp, i find you don't really need that much distortion to get the paranoid tone and the riff is mainly palm muted which will clean up alot of your 'muddiness'
Hope this helps

I usually have treble at 5, bass at 7, mids at 4 or 5.
