Pickups shouldn't get worn out. I'm ot a very techy guy, but it's most likely your tone pots or that the batteries in the pickups (if they are active) are dead, rather than the pickups themselves. Vintage guitars fetch a fortune, partly because the pickups still sound great after 40 years.

well its not really getting 'worn out' but the plasrtic type stuff around the twin humbuckers r falling apart from being hit with the pick and stuff... :)

What sorta sound are you looking for? What do you play?

I only have experience with Dimarzio pups but if I know what sound you wish to achieve then I can offer some suggestions.

Cheers

James uses EMG 81s' at the bridge and 85s' at the neck last I heard. Although I'm sure he has his own model now. Kirk uses the same. Old school Metallica was about as basic as you can get. Gibson flying-V or explorer to a Marshall stack with high's and low's at 10 and mids at 0. I really doubt that either Kirk or James cared enough about their tone back then to actually change pickups.
Ain't nothin' but a Gear thang, baby!

Pickups will die on you from time to time. That's why I put EMG's in my four string.
