I keep a notebook with my most of the time. If I hear, see, or think of anything I find interesting I write it down. Later I'll look at it while I'm writing a song, it especially helps if you get stuck and can't think of another line. Also, don't be judgemental of your lyrics. Get some other people to hear them or look at them and see what they think.
