You like that tone? I think it's one of the worst lead tones ever recorded! I like the song, but the tone--ewwww! But that's my opinion. :)

Off the top of my head (without listening to it again), you'll need a wah pedal, a BOSS DS1, and a chorus pedal.

You'll find your harder pressed to find people who don't like Satch's tone than do. In fact, you're the first person I've ever heard EVER dislike it.

That's ok. We don't all have to agree on everything.

I don't mind his tone as much on some later albums, like The Extremist, but Surfing . . . was way too processed a sound for me.

I love all of Joe's stuff but I have to agree that Joe's tone has gotten way better over time.

I love the early stuff no matter what it sounds like to me now, but Joe has gotten some really good organic, bluesy tones on some of his later albums.

Even his new Peavey rig sounds way better to me than his older tones.

I would say, go for the tone you like, who cares about what others like.

Just opinions, everyone's got one, or two. :D

I'm a big fan of Satch too but I admit that the the tone on 'Surfing With The Alien' was pretty horrible, ground breaking for the time but dated and overly 80's when you compare to what technology can produce today. The one thing about Satch is that his tones have improved immensly over the past few albums starting with 'The Extremist' - my favourite selection can be found on 'Strange Beautiful Music'. The earlier stuff was a combo of the Boss distortion pedal and overdrive pedal, throw in a little too much chorus and the odd bit of reverb and there you have it. The newer stuff is a different kettle of fish all together, generated by a rig the size of a large freezer that costs about the same as the GDP of a small country.

As you might imagine, I can get pretty close with a JS1000 and a POD in Modern HiGain mode with a bit of chorus, and maybe some delay....

I happen to now for a fact that he is using a jpm1 marshall preamp in the effects loop of his signal to get that tone
