Friends,

Following link is from music of Indian mandolin (mini-guitar) player U.Shrinivas (also a member of Shakti group). In the song "g-Javali" there is some subtle yet very evident guitar effect in action. I think its an effect that subtly alters the envelope of the tone of his instrument but i could be entirely wrong. I will highly appreciate if you could guide me in the right direction here.

I listened to it and I didn't hear what your talking about. Of course I could only make myself listen to about 1 minute of it.

Are you talking about the tone of the main harmony part?

Just a guess but it sounds like a chorus pedal on a very low setting.
There's also a bunch of compression. More than likely, he uses a MultiEffects pedal with compression, EQ, Chorus, a noise gate and a little reverb.

I believe you might be talking about the funky vibrato he uses every now and then. That's not an effect, that's just in how he's playing the instrument.

Definitely a ton of compression. Plus there's some delay and perhaps some chorus.

Thanks Mark,
i tried compression with my VG-88 but not without too much noise and it also kills the life out of the tone. If he is using ton of compression how does he sound so lively ? Am i using it incorrectly or my processor is crappy ?

It's probably got additional compression added after recording it, using a decent studio compressor. I do the same thing on my recordings. I'll use compression on a pedal to help out with the sustain and even out the sound so I can get a hotter signal. Then during mixdown, I'll have to add compression to the recorded track or it gets lost in the music.
