It is never too late. My wife took up the bass at age 45. My sister-in-law started playing guitar at age 35.
How long will it take? As long as it takes. Do not rush. There is no hurry. If you rush it you will only get frustrated and stop playing. You must enjoy what you are doing to be successful.
Good luck and HAVE FUN!!!!!

i took it up at this year as a 17 year old and i know it doesn't sound old but i'm surrounded by 16 year olds who've been playing since they were 12 and it makes u feel kinda obsolete, but all you have to remember is that you're not doing it to make money or to impress anybody, your doing it to explore your own methods of expression, and music is a good way to chill out anyways, plus chix dig it.
give it 2 years and if you've focussed on a particular genre of music then you should be able to nail some pretty convincing songs, i've seen people who've been playing for 1 or 2 years and have dedicated all their time to metal and can play master of puppets pretty damn well, and that's quite a difficult song to play and make look easy.

Don't burn yourself out by practicing so long each day. I'm sure if you like it enough, you'll be fine. Good luck!

the main thing about starting learning an instrument is sticking with it, even though it seems really hard. after you get a feel for it, everything goes alot easier.

both. exercises are important for the beginner but they get so boring. thats why you should learn songs.
