the problem with blues is that it's hard to do something original, and to stay in the frame of the blues without advancing to rock, that's maybe because of the scales problem in blues, i mean you can use lots of scales but most of the blues guys use only blues and pentatonic scales
i'm sure that people like SRV never heard about modes in their whole life

Really i did'nt get into theory until after i played,
about ten years .I only got into it for teaching guitar,
plus to find out what i was really doing on the guitar.
as far as the modes i found out after getting into theory,
i was playing out of all the modes by ear.
Which i still use my ear i don't really think of scales,
or modes i just play music.
And as far as i know SRV also did'nt play by scales he just,
played the blues.
