It seems as if no other musician has had more posthumous music released
than the mighty Jimi Hendrix. But more amazing is the stratospheric, comet-like carrer of the man who, more than anyone before or since revolutionized
the way the electric guitar is played. His prodigious guitar playing, his
soul-saturated, swaggering vocal style, and Aura seemed to hypnotize.
From 1966 till his death in 1970, he breathed life into his stratocaster, squeezing a new sonic language from the fret board that had never been played, before. nearly 40 years after his death his music remains popluar.

PURE' the word Quote? means that I borrowed it and did a little editing on my own. I don't know who the actual quote came from. I'm not sure what you meant about speed. Anyway I don't think hendrix played very fast. HIS studio work was phenominal. Axis BOLD as love " ELECTRIC LADY LAND" too much.
I saw him in Monteray Calif. when I was in the army hospital at fort Ord, Calif.

hendrix was good, but not the best. Im not gona get a lot into it, but a ton of his songs were covers and his spin on it was using heroin or lsd to hear things in is head and match it on the guitar. Technically, a lot of guitarists are as good or better than him. but i still like his music as well

I think with Jimi, you have to look at the time (as was already stated in the thread!). For his time, he was the best. There are faster players today. There are flashier players too. No doubt. But back when Rock and Roll was moving into a new incarnation, Jimi blew people away. I still love to hear his music and find myself still getting chills hearing Little Wing. There have been techncally better versions, but Jimi's has ... well ... something.

You can go back through every generation and find players who simply smoked their compatriots. Django, Robert Johnson, Son House, Albert King, Chet Atkins, Charlie Christian, Larry Carlton...etc. Better than Jimi? I don't know. Different, yes.

Heck, Chuck Berry was considered by many to be one of the best guitarist of his generation. I don't know how I feel about that but you can't deny the mans talents.

Same thing with Jimi.

Good point. I can remember when every band had it's own sound. A group had to be different, to make the seen. I liked "Electric Lady Land" best of all his work. :)

I hope that was'nt ment as a cheap shot. It was by accident that I was in montery. A nurse from the hospital took me to see the Jazz festival. I didn't know anything about him. I have to say that I didn't even like what he did. I wasn't up to speed. But it didn't take long. :)

I know what you mean. Have u ever listened to" Electric Lady Land ". I also think that there will always be two sides to weather Hendrix was a virtuoso or not. He did change things and opened up doors to what can be played on the guitar, and what could be called music. :)

The only thing I dont like about Hendrix is, he had to rely on being high and drugged up to put on a good show.

Naw, you got it backasswards. All kinds of drugs were easily available, so he indulged.

Drugs didn't give him his talent. That was there, like an elemental force, looking for direction. Psychodelic drugs showed him where he wanted to take his music. His management imposed such a heavy schedule on him that he was doing tranqs to get some sleep, and then uppers to stay awake. Those drugs killed him.
