I wouldn't recommend trying too do a sunburst on your first attempt. Its very hard to fix a mistake.

I think you would get your best/easiest result by using gunstock oil to seal the wood after you stain it. This gives a smoth, satiny finish that is easy to maintain and is very easy to apply. Just rub it on with a soft cloth.
