Hey guys, for gcse music we have to perform an ensemble piece, and all of us in the group have little idea of what to play, we have two guitarists, a keyboard player a drummer and two (yes that's two!) bass players in our group and as far as i know, none of us can sing (although we may try and get one of the bass players to do vocals) and after seeing other guys having had success with similar posts, i thought that we may have such success. We are looking to play an instrumental, preferbly something fairly technical, any ideas?

metallica songs are easy. and they're popular. and technical. and if you don't wanna sing you can do like Orion or something. Man i love Orion.

it has alot of drums
a short bass solo
and guitar solos all over.

even i can play it and i've only been playing 4 years.

we've considered that but we need something for the keyboard player to do  cause this is one we get graded on, so everyone needs to be doing something. But to be honest, i can't think of many songs with difficult keyboard parts in, (or songs which the rest of us can play anyway...)

A slight Problem you may run into is the keyboard player when it comes to metal.

It can be done but will probrably sound too "riff" heavy w/ twin GTR, Twin Bass, and a keyborad doubling what has already been doubled.

Have every one list 3 songs they would like to play. See what is most common and vote. Or if every one has a different song then use what every one listed, find a common band or groove and decide on the song then.

I don't know if I'll be much help on this as I've only been playing a short while but I know Rammstein's song "Asche zu Asche" (on the Herzeleid album) has keyboards in it as well as a small and simple solo for it as well. The tab for it doesn't look to difficult but you'll need a singer and someone doing small backups on it as well.

Rammstein is the only metal type band I can think of that basically has what you require. Hope this helps :)

EDIT: You may get out of singing it if you don't know german, I once looked for an english version of the lyrics and couldn't find one. :(

Led Zeppelin holds all the answers!

Stairway to heaven- 1 rhythm guitarist, 1 lead guitarist, 2 bassists play the same thing, Drummer, and the keyboard player plays the main riff in the beginning and during the chorus match the guitarists.

Kashmir works to.

Really what you could do, is play most any metal song and just have the keyboards just play the chords along with the rhythm guitar.

Yep. plus you can have the keyboards improv the same chords the rythm or bass is playing.

With that many instruments, you may need to jazz it up a bit. Pick a metal piece that you like, play the main riff and the chorus, and then spiral off into riffing variations and solos. Or, you could take a non-metal instrumental and play it with a metal twist. Personally, I have always wanted to hear a black metal band of some kind cover "Careful With That Axe, Eugene" by Pink Floyd. It's very sinister and edgy, with keyboard solos and some primal screams to boot. It even has scope to slot in some crashing guitars, and maybe even a feedback-laden solo.
But it's up to you, mate... don't do anything that you and the band don't feel comfortable with.
"It's all folk music... I ain't never heard no horse sing!"
- Attributed variously to Leadbelly and Louis Armstrong

If at first you don't succeed, you are obviously not Chuck Norris.

That's a good idea too. That song rocks! It's got pretty much everything you can think of in that one song.

What about 'wizards in winter' by the TSO.
For life is quite absurd and death's the final word, You must always face the curtain with a bow
Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.

cheers guys, i knew i'd get an excellent response, you're all bl**dy brilliant (sorry, don't know language restrictions so playing it safe.) We'll look at all of these, the only problem with playing improvisational solos is that in order to be graded we need to hand in a score of the piece, so we'd have to write it out, which i can just about do, but it takes me a looooong time.
