what guitar and amp to buy

right now i got a fender squier and a fender 15 amp.
i just got hold of 2000$ thought ill spend on some new gear.
i have´nt been playing for that long, but i better spend the money on gear, that on beer and women :D
im thinking of a pure rock/metal guitar and amp.

so what should i get.

Stick to the trusted name brands.
Marshall, Mesa-Boogie etc...
For guitars, it's a total personal choice. There's so many things to consider that you have to spend time trying them out. Again though, stick to the trusted name brands.
My personal requirements before I'll even pick up a guitar is that it has to have 24 frets and the control knobs can't be directly below the pickups so I don't smash my knuckles on em.
After that it comes down to how well it stays in tune across all the frets.
If it plays a perfect open E, then you fret an E at the 12th fret and it's outa tune, it either needs a major intonation or something's drastically wrong.
With 2 grand to spend, don't skimp.

Another consideration is how sticky the fretboard is. I like a guitar that's got some wear and tear in it so the frets are worn down slightly.
Brand new guitars are like washboards. Basically, I almost always buy used.

I've still got my old Roland 808 guitar for my synth that I hardly ever play and it's still got frets that havent' worn down. So if you plan on buying a new one, figure on taking a couple of years steady playing to wear it in properly.

ESP LTD make pretty nice metal guitars, but then again if you're buyin an ESP LTD you have to make the switch to active pickups which may not be your kind of thing. You can get a lot for 2 grand, probably a good half stack and a gibson even if you shop around (especially if u live in the US)

This question is asked about 50 times a year... and it's always the same answer... Try out guitars at a store and get one that you like. It doesn't really matter what other people think. As long as you like it and it plays good. Any guitar that you buy in the 1 grand range shoud be an excellent guitar. Like schmange said. Stick the name brands for now. They're the most common guitars... and generally are the best starter/beginner guitars. Check out ESP/LTD, Jackson, Ibanez, and Schecter for good metal/rock guitars. Look into a 2X12 combo for your amp. You don't need anything bigger than that! Especially since you're just starting. A 2x12 combo is a lot louder than most people think. So check out the Marshall JCM series and TSL series tube amps for a great rock/metal sound. Also, the 2X12 Peavey 5150 and JSX are pretty smooth amps for around a grand.

Haha thats strange...my personal requirements are 22frets and no floyd Rose...I guess that just illustrates the personal preference statement.

Dude for two grand you can get quite a bit...a nice tube combo and a Esp/Gibson/or whatever guitar could easily be had for that much.

I know most people stick with the most common brands, like Marchall, Mesa, Soldano etc etc..... But there's an amp that beats most of them. 7 years ago I bought a Koch Amp (Dutch build Tube amp). It was a Koch kc50 Deluxe class A tube amp. After a few years playing it Koch came up with a new line of amps, the multitone and Powertone series, (they also have smaller models like the twintone and studiotone)
I decided to buy the Mutlitone 100 watt version. 3 way channel clean crunch and lead, low hi speaker damping, recording out serial end parallel effect loops 2 celestion 30watt 16 ohm vintage speakers.

This amp sounds like crazy and you get all the tone you want out of it. This is a promisse!!! On the Koch website you can read more.... Just watch the artist list and of all the people who uses a Koch amp.... you will see some really famous people, Like Paul reed Smit or Al di Meola

Koch makes some awesome amps...Paul Reed Smith plays them...although he's not really reknowned for his playing ability, is he?

I played a few last year, they stock them at Holliday music in Leytonstone, East london....some really awesome amps they do make

I own an Eric Clapton spec Stratocaster guitar that features an extreme V-shaped neck and three gold Fender-Lace™ Sensor pickups with a 25 db active mid-boost circuit with 11-guage strings. I love this guitar.

But......it does NOT sound like a "Les Paul".

I took my guitar to Guitar Center. I pluged into the same amp, both my Strat and a Standard Les Paul. I adjust both guitar's settings to be equal and played the same notes. The Les Paul sounded so much better. There is no doubt that the Gibson Les Paul is a higher quality and better sounding guitar.

The Les Paul is about 50% heavier than a Strat, but that's the only disadvantage other than the 50% higher cost.

I would buy a Gibson Les Paul guitar.

I personally own a Gibson Les Paul as well...I like it alot, but it is no Telecaster, dont get me wrong, I love my Les Paul, but sometimes I just really want the twang of a tele...which I cant get from a Les Paul, or a strat...and of course, my Les Paul, and said tele couldnt get the versatility of a strat...all I'm trying to say is that ultimately it is personal preference...we can all suggest models that we like...you MUST go and play the guitars and find out which models you like

When you're buying equipment i think it's best to have a particular idea of what you're going to be playing with it, a few guitarist that i know through my guitar school who do fill ins for different bands have a few guitars, so they can be quite versatile, but i don't think that'd be your aim.

Pure Rock/Metal Guitar - i asume it's all gonna be hard rock, which means killer distortion, which means humbuckers, which means duel humbuckers, which means gibson style guitar.

Hey dude who called me the dude who was talking about the Koch amps.

I have a fender performer guitar build in 1986. Ik can get al the fender sounds out of it,because of the double coin pickups that are seperatly switchable (is that english?) Really great sound..... I love it!!.....
Besides that I have A Les Paul Custom, black / gold plated hardware.
A Gibson just has that great sound you need when you play the oldfashioned Rock.
Last but not least is my Abel Axe, Swiss build, 200 made of, Alluminium Body....Crystal clear Tone......

I am in the market for a new amp...right now I am looking very keenly at the Ibanez Thermion through an Orange 2x12 cab.
I have been hunting around for months to find the perfect cab...the Orange is awesome, but now I have to wait for more stock to come into the country...

anyway, nice gear man...I have a Gibson Les paul, a Cort s2550, an Ibanez mmm1, an Ibanez edr170 and a Paul Reed Smith custom22 artist package...

only one nice amp though...a Laney vc 50...looking to add a Thermion tho (unlesss Koch is nicely priced)

.............................................. First... That's your opinion... Secondly, it's a biased one... If you compare the sound of a Stratocaster to the sound of a Gibson and expect them to sound the same... you're outside your mind... and obviously missing a point somewhere... Strats aren't suppose to sound like Les Pauls. They're the exact opposite kind of guitars... Comparing the two and saying that it's a bad thing that your Strat doesn't sound like an LP makes me wonder why you went out and spent 1300 dollars on your EC Strat when you should have just bought an LP in the first place................. Anyway... my point. Don't compare Strats to LPs... you either like one or the other... and they're both good for their own things... but you CAN make a Strat sound like an LP.... I know for a fact that you can... because I've got a double fat strat that will nail any tone you want it to... On the other hand... good luck getting a strat tone out of an lp

hey, I have a push/pull pot installed on my Les paul...it splits the coils of the pickups...I can get a pretty damn accurate strat sound out of it...I would say it is atleast as accurrate as your humbucker-humbucker strat is able to get...although I guess mine does have a set neck-mahoganny body that sirt of stops stratishness, much like the alder/ash and bolt-on neck would prevent any strat from sounding exactly like a Les Paul...

although when comparing stock models, there is absolutley no doubt that the strat is a more versatile guitar.

^^ Yeah, I'm in agreeance with all that. I have heard tapped coil LPs with vintage pickups and they get a decent thin-strat tone. My double fat strat has a JB/59 set in it... and I fused the the neck to the body the same way Gibson sets the neck of LPs.... and I use GHS Zakk Wylde Boomers... so it gets pretty dang close to an LP tone... albeit... it's not an LP therefor it won't sound just like an LP.

Strats and Les Pauls are apples and oranges... they're two different breeds... and they're made for two different types of players...
