In a nutshell:
Rock = Marshall
Metal = Mesa

The Mesa is much more versatile, but its a real bitch to dial-in. The tone controls interact with each other, and with the gain and volume controls, making it a real trial-and-error process to find the right settings. With care and patience, you can get 'Marshall' sounds out of a Mesa, but Marshalls are one-trick ponies. They only sound like Marshalls. Which is not a bad thing at all.

the marshall mode four is different from most marshall amps tone. it's a high gain metal amp, along with the dual recto.

I've played both amp maybe once or twice each. I remember liking the tone of the mesa a bit more though. But if you're shelling out this kind of cash for an amp, make sure you play them first and decide which YOU like better. also, don't forget to try out the B-52 AT-100 as well, it has a great high-gain metal tone that I fell in love with instantly that I may have even liked more than the mesa!

If I remember right... I believe the Mode Four has a hybrid circuitry... allowing it to use tube tone... or bypass the tubes for a solid state tone. Making it a very versatile amp. However, the Mesa Rectifier is probably reveered as the most popular amp in rock and metal... Next to the Marshall JCM-800/900 series amp which was the first true metal amp out there. If you're looking at a Mesa... check out a JCM.
