Hello all,

I'm searching for the effect, that can be found in lots of music: the guitar "cries", screams. Is it some kind of wah-wah effect?

Thank you all,
axes

I'm actually pretty interested in this too, tho i think u should have called it "screaming guitar" woulda got a lot more responses. Is it done with vibrato, whammi bar or effects?

try to play harmonics (artificial). maybe that is what are you looking for.....use heavy distortion and i think you can get very screaming sound, especially if you have pickups with high output.

and if that is not screaming enough, you can use tremolo

There are many ways to make your guitar "cry"; one of my favourites is to turn up the drive a little and use a volume pedal function. Play the note in question with the pedal all the way up, then slowly depress it to bring the note in. If you use plenty of vibrato, this will give the note a bit of a "weeping" feel.

It could be that you're talking about bends...those are pretty scream/cry-y. If you want to learn about bends I'm sure there's a lesson on the site about them.
You go outside and practice screaming. We'll play music while you're gone.

When you say Screaming etc, do you mean such as say... Slayer solo's or fast metal, anything with that real high pitch ..... "scream"....
Would be called Pinch harmonics, which is discussed somewhere in these forums, the trick is holding your thumb a little closer to the edge of the pick, and your thumb just lightly touches the string on the way past with the pick... i probably havent made that sound right but im sure its already explained so this will just put you on the right track.

they're a bitch to get started, but once you get em...... :) enjoy

Yes, I meant the screaming guitar, the very high pitch, and almost-a-vowel-sounding-like tone! How can it be done? I just can't figure it out. Harmonics don't have anything do with them as far as I know. It's some kind of effect. But which

As Suicidal Moose suggested, it may be a tremolo bar effect. When you pull a note sharp on your bar, it can make a "WHEEEEEEEEE!" noise.

Well a tremolo bar changes pictch...essentially the same as a bend. Axes, maybe you can tell us a song where you hear this sound? I'm not sure any of us get it.

ok best way to explain it, u know satriani, he's playing his solo extremely fast and he'll get to this point where it's really high pitch and he'll hold that note and open his mouth like it's actually difficult and have this strained expression on his face and the guitar will be like really high pitched.

Okay, I made a sound sample of it... there are two parts in this mp3 file, the first one is what I'm searching for, the second one is it too, but it isn't crying as much as the first one!

The sample

Well the sample was screwing up and cutting out a lot, but I think what you mean could be vibrato? From what I could make out, the part you are referring to was playing high up on the neck with vibratro on the last note of each bar. Vibrato is basically bending the string up and down really fast. It sounds like "WeEeEeW". Best way I can describe it, I'm afraid. :o Take a look around, I'm sure you can find a video to describe it. If that's not it, I don't know what to tell you.

Yes! You are right, that's the vibrato, but it sounds a lot different than if i play a vibrato with a normal distorted tone... it has got something to do with effects! Try do do the same on your guitar, it won't sound like that!

Hmm...could it be a light chorus effect added to it? I'll try it when I get home, with and without chorus, and see how it sounds.

Also, pitch harmonics with bends can make that noise if you do them on the thinner strings.

You really should start a new thread for this, buddy. Just click "new thread" above the forums and ask your question. Putting off-topic questions in other people's threads is a good way to get them ignored, and is kind of rude. I'll forgive you this time though. :D

Well I tried it with and without chorus. Without chorus it still had a similar sound, but with a light chorus it sounded much more like the sample. Not too much, just enough to thicken up the tone a bit. Light chorus, high up the neck, vibrato. That's my answer. *exhausted* :D

EDIT: Oh yeah, wah and chorus aren't the same. You should check out some kind of chorus effect and experiment with it to try and get the sound you want.
