I guess when I look at music charts, I see the sharps or flats and I determine the parent major key from those sharps/flats. Also, saying that this piece is in Emajor sort of solidifies the main scale to use for this piece, which would be C# Aeolian, rather than dorian or another minor scale such as the harmonic minor.
