well as far as I know, the HD 147 is the real deal when it comes to modeling. Dont get me wrong, I have a spider II, and it rocks like hell, but its not much compared to the 147. Its much more versitile, and sounds more thicker, and warmer. Yea, I know its a modeling amp, so how can I say that, well I cant. It just something you feel. There are much more models to choose from and alot of them do emulate classic and modern tube tones much better. Spider II is an exelent practice amp, but if your gonna get a modeling head, the 147 is a better amp.
But I do understand the HD 147 is MUCH more expensive than the Spider II. Its about $1300. Thats a whole lot of money for a solid state amp. Therefore, you may want to look into a nice tube head. This is just my opinion, if the Solid state amps rock your socks, go ahead!
