by finest do you mean the thinnest, most threadlike strings, or do you mean the best?

if its the latter, basically, you get what you pay for. Ive tried Elixirs, D'attiros, Ernie Balls, GHS.... and to tell the truth, I havnt found too much of a differance between different brands. the only thing that really changes the tone is the guage.

Yeah the latter that's exactly what I was looking for thanks a lot. I know that it's probably hard to describe, but what do different gauges sound like?

um, the thicker the string, the richer the sound. it has alot thicker of a tone. a tad bit deeper sounding too.
basically the tone is overall better.

when its thinner, it gets a tinny sound. the thinnest gauge Ive seen is an 8. I bet its very treble sounding. but thinner isnt all bad, Its a whole lot easier to play. bends, tapping, everything just is alot simpler.

I've always used 10's. its a happy median between the two. its thin enough that everything is still easy to play, and thick enough that it still has a nice full sound.

I use a variety of different guages, all of them elixers though...I am a true convert!
My prs is strung up with 9's
my Gibson with 10's
my Cort with 11's
and my baritone with baritone guage elixers...not sure what they are.

I really like elixers. I used to play Ghs and D'addario, both of which were pretty good, but I find elixers have nicer tone, and for longer (which the bloody should have, costing twice as much as any of the others)
