ibanez tube screamer

hello,
i was wondering what an a pedal such as the ibanez tube screamer (ts-7) is used for? whats the difference b/t that and a reg. distortion pedal. is it good for a metal (metallica) sound?

the tube screamer basically is a distortion pedal.. i believe it's got more of a blues rock/classic rock type sound than a metal sound.. SRV used two of them i think, also pearl jam uses them.
