Interesting post with a lot of heated opinion....!

I have to say the older you get the more you tend to veer away from the death growl/scream type vocal. I remember reading an interview with Chuck Schuldiner from Death where he said he regretted calling the band Death and regretted being stuck with the growl vocal. In fact he said that if he could do it al again he would have had a deep-thinking rock band called 'Human'. I believe he even started a project to that effect just before he died.

What bugs me more than gruff vocals of heavy bands is childish negative lyrics. Why do 'most' death/black metal bands mostly have to sing about murder and satanic themes (like those idiots in Cannibal Corpse and Deicide)? In a lot of cases good death metal bands would actually sound a lot better without the vocals at all. Take Nocturnus for example, the music on their Thresholds album was incredible but the vocals held them back. I would have thought that by now most death metal bands would have grown up and started singing about things that actually mean something (like the changes Carcass and Death made in their approach).

Take it from me, once you have a kid you're view of the world changes and you realise how ridiculous a lot of things are. Doesnt mean I don't play heavy guitar anymore or that I don't listen to death metal... I guess I just lost respect for the negative bands and have no desire to listen to them anymore. Maybe I am just getting old!
