I'm having trouble getting this technique down. I know how guitar tapping is supposed to work as you're supposed to tap with your right hand on the fretboard but i'm having trouble playing the notes. i'm using a distortion pedal but everytime i tap with my right hand, i don't produce a sound. i end up muting the strings. am i not doing it correctly? (obviously, not). or is the gain on my distortion not high enough? (i don't think this is the problem).

You're just not pushing down hard enough. You have to tap the string hard enough that it frets. The force of your pushing it will cause the string to vibrate.

Also, you might be muting the strings with your palm and not realizing it. Or, if you're wearing a long-sleeved shirt, it might be touching the strings.

Listen to the other two guys that have posted so far. You do need to push down a little harder and you may be muting it in some other way. Also, you do not need distortion/gain to tap. Joe Satriani has a cool tapping piece, "Midnight," that is played clean with a little reverb.
