Are you talking about original solo's or copying other peoples solos off CD's?

Its good to start practicing making scales in pentatonic scales. I'd type more, but I'm off to the swamp!

ah, but how WELL do you know it.

i think knowing scales isnt the important thing- rather how you use them. just going up and down the scale might be fine for some crazy shred routine, but in everything else, it gets boring. fast. just knowing the pentatonic scale is fine, but knowing how to work with it and learning how it works is much more important.

just working on your scales, thats great. run them up and down as a warm up. but writing a solo should show feeling. it should have the same energy as the rest of the song. a solo is making a point that cant be done with words.

sometimes a good place to start is acutally looking at other solos. get a tab for a solo somewhere and look at how they made it. identify the scales, the runs, everything. seeing how others do it can help alot.

thats confusing me about solos making points. i listen to even the most famous solos and no matter how hard i try, all i hear is a bunch of notes that sound good. i hear no deeper meaning.

Hey, I would suggest learning the basic blues scale this will get you started. Even if you dont play the blues the scale can pretty much be played in any music and sound damn good. GOODLUCK

well- most famous solos do have a feeling to them. they arnt just strait scales. the best ones give you that feeling in your gut that you cant really describe.

if your just hearing a jumble of notes in a solo, your listening to the wrong solos man. lol

Scales are good to know. The pentatonic is the best place to start. However, you need to start learning how to make music with any scale you learn immediately. That means learning phrases, sequences, etc. Playing up and down scales will get you absolutely nowhere.
