Here in Charlotte, NC USA, I can find 30 minute lessons for anywhere from $16 to $25.. Depending on the experience of your instructor.
I took lessons for awhile. Loved the time of One-On-One lessons. Group lessons tend to less expensive per unit, and generally around here, last about an hour. But, you are sharing a single instructor and assistant with others..
Check in your newspaper, also, ask at any music store you have around you. Another option is to check with the local colleges Music programs and see if there is someone looking to teach.
Good Luck in your search! After a year of ignoring my Guitars, I think I'm ready to pick them up again... Wish me luck!!!

Sorry if I'm late on responding.
Guitar lessons around here on average are about $30/hour. (That's why I never took any.)
Now, acoustic is a smart place to start, but if as a result of not getting an electic, you won't play as much, get an electric. My parents begged me to get an acoustic. I was in grade 8, and that wasn't an option for me. I've never regretted getting the electic since, I haven't put it down. In fact, I never played an acoustic in my life until grade 9. I do, however play at least half an hour of acoustic alone every day. It's a beautiful sound and a great workout.
I learned from a 'how to play' book basic chords. I learned my favourite songs from online tabs, and now learn more each month in Guitar One magazine.
Good luck Buddy.

From this dude. He's awesome. He's a completely self-taught guitarist, so he has a very leftfield attitude to music and the music industry, as you can see from his record label site. His label's primary function is to promote unsigned alternative bands, which, I guess, is why his value for money is so great. I'm not exactly sure whether he'd be able to fly out to Canada once a week to teach you, but hey - I wouldn't rule it out! :D

It most likely is but would be money and labor intesive. It would probably be a better choice to save up and get something with a trem that's a little more up the ladder.
