i came up with this chord progression and i havent a clue what it is. clearly it is not a usually mode of the majour scale because the intervals are weird

it goes; D5 B5 F5 Bflat5 A5
D5 B5 F5 Aflat5 A5

sometimes i play C5 after the second line eg D5 B5 Aflat5 A5 C5

if the rythm is useful it is 4 beats of D, 4 of B, 4 of F, 2 of Bflat, 2 of A
4 beats of D, 4 of B, 4 of F, 2 of Aflat, 2 of A

this seems wierd because there are four consecutive notes in a row if i dont use C5 and if i do there are 5. i could be temporarily shifting the key or adding flat fives but i am not sure.

Ok I've played it through.

In general, this can be thought of as a progression in Dminor.

Ok so it has a B in it, which means for the first part of the progression you can probably think of it as D Dorian (relative to the c major scale)
But when you play the Bb chord, its D Aeolian (relative to the F major scale)

The Ab chord doesn't fit at all really. If you like the sound of it, then by all means play it. Here's what I would play (if I were to use the Aflat chord):

//D //B //F //Bb A //
//D //B //F //Ab G //

I think that sounds cooler.
Here's a little mp3 of me playing it which I spent one minute on:

sorry it's not that loud.

thanks for answering your reply was usefull. as to the Aflat i was sorta goin for that slightly weird flavor where the chord doesnt land were you think it will, but it is gonna make it hard to play lead over. but yeah i quite like your version but at the same time i want to play lead over somethin thats not the usuall

anyways thanx

A quick note on that: it's not to be used lightly. There is a real science to what chords will work with that sound in mind and what will not.

Yeah the Ab to A sequence has a very particular sound when I play it as well, but it would depend on how you pull it off to whether it will work or not. The Ab to G has more of a familiar sound to it. Since it contains the same interval as the Bb - A.

F-Gb-A has an even darker tone.

Anything goes. What matters is the message you want to send is what you want your music to reflect.
