How is He going to learn his TIMING OR THE METER from a Tab?
Plus how is he going to know if he is developing bad habits?ect ect Also should we just throw out music theory?
I/m not saying you can't learn to play guitar on the web,
but mabee some day he might want to play useing a 5/4 timing.
plus be able to communicate with other guitar players,
by knowing a little theory.
Also how do you know hes got a good enough ear for all this stuff your wanting him to listen to plus learn?
Some guitarests can never learn to play by ear, plus,
learn to adlib on thier solo's.
Mabee should have also told him to learn a few jazz substition chords also...............................
P:S Learning from a video is fine for some also but what,
about if you can'nt get your note or chord to sound like,
the instructor on the video who do you call?(911)

:Well, Are you going to play guitar with DEAF EAR? I t is the basis of sound. Without hearing you will never know thw tempo, in addition, normal hearing cannot beat good hearing. From hearing he will develop basic skills such as know how to listen to timing and beats. Of course it will take time to learn all timing but that doesn't mean you can forget about hearing. Of course for beginners, they do not know what are we talking about, but soon he will discover or even better than us. Of course hearing is easy as we said. But the right way to intrepret sound, tune and timing must be good. How people can get off-tune. Because they thought and they heard they are playing the right tune and timing, in fact they don't. Who does he get help from? Well, look around you. There are a lot of people and opportunities to get help from. I suggest him to use the tab as an alternative to learn guitar. If depend on one source, you won't get anywhere. You can learn by asking people, the web, books and tabs, looking at peoples technique of playing or copy from media( video, cd, cassette). Like I said before, know all basic chords is a must. Again about the timing, he can either learn from others or develop naturally from his existing knowledge and interpretation of sounds and beats. This requires higher heearing skills other than beat countings.
