Right. I don't really care wether you like this or not, I haven't recoded these to sound great, I have recorded them to try to give a representative A vs B test. This concept seems to bother some people so I'll say this using very small words

it is an A vs B test.

Could either sound better?

Yes they could !

Would that involve EQing them differently?

Yes it would.

Would this lend its self to the pepsi challenge, altering only one variable ?

No it would not.

so, which one is the strat, which is the variax.

Recorded using the neck PU into a PodXT Live set to patch 1b @ 24/44.1 into Logic

Sounds to me like neck A is thinner and more digital sounding.
Neck B sounds more like a real guitar.

I say B is the strat. Here's why. A still sounded very similar to the other clip in the other thread. Also, if the variax model was after a '59, and the real strat was an 80's or so, I would think that the pickups might possible be a touch hotter in the strat, as they are a bit more modern. I'm probably way wrong, but that's what my ears hear.

Because they are different sound clips recorded using different pickup settings (both neck this time) and a different interface (Pod XT live). Not the same at all !! Changing sound clips after some people had voted would also not be fare !

Neck pickup, you say? "Neck B" is the Strat. One reason I was willing to part with my '62 RI (apart from facing eviction if I didn't raise some rent money fast) was that the sound got so much less clear as the selector moved away from the bridge pickup. I'd still like to have it back.

I wonder if Line 6 based their sample on a MIJ RI ?

I have heard that the Japanese pickups weren't as good as US issue. I'd still like to have that axe back, but I'd probably change the pups & pots.

from the Line6 book, the guitar they modeled it on was a 59 Strat, (probably why it sounds (but not plays) better than my Calif 89 strat) !

Baaa !
