I finally bought a new amp, well traded and paid some money for it. :D
It is a Traynor Custom Valve 80 tube amp, 2x12 Celestion speakers, footswitch was still in the plastic never opened I got it for $400.Used but in great shape. it retails for $999.00 and the cheapest I have seen it online is $759.00 so I think I got a pretty good deal. I traded a 7 year old Squier strat, a chorus pedal someone gave to me, a Fender 25R amp, and a Banjo I got for my 13th birthday it was cheap I think my dad gave $75. for it. They gave me $200 for all this junk, so I paid $200 cash for the amp.

Here is a link to the the company that makes this amp.

I've been considering a Traynor 2x12 actually.

Where's the best place online (or anywhere, for that matter) to get good used gear?

I think thats a brilliant deal just on the numbers i dont know anthing about that amp though

right then,
solid state/transistor/digital/"normal amp" - these all use digital electronics to create the sound and all those names meen the same thing, these are usually the cheapest too.
Valve/tube amp - more expensive, use valves/tubes suprisesuprise, these are the best amps, you get more natural overdrive, distortion, gain, clean...... , they basicallly sound much nicer. Also they are alot louder than a solid state amp of equal wattage.
Valve state - these are hybrid amps, part solid state and part valve so they are cheaper to make but sound more like a fully valve amp, the valves are usually just in the preamp stage.

Stacks
erm im not too sure abut this but i think a full stack is a amp head (valve or solid state) driving two cabinats
and a half stack is a amp head (valve of solid state) driving one cabinet

hope that helps

I would be careful saying that tube amps are always better than solid state amps...there are afew people who would disagree...some of them packing quite a weighty punch in their opinion...for example...: Dimebag used Randall solid state amps for many years, Wayne Static of Static-X uses Marshall Valvestate,Chuck Shulinder of Death did as well.

Then alot of guitarists use only digital processors...the guy from Scissor sisters uses only a Pod XT live...no amp...and as far as I know, Savage Gardens touring guitarist also uses a Pod straight into the house P.a....not really guitar bands...but the dudes must do it this way because they find it works best...

all that said, I am a tube snob...and prefer tube amps in general, even though I really like the sound of some solid state amps.

I once had a go on some huge Marshall tube amp, and it was terrible! The overdrive sounded like a buzzing fridge, except ear-splittingly loud; and the clean channel was a mess as well. To be honest, I preferred my little 15-watt solid state bass amp.
