I can not find where you do this at I go into my account and click on "Edit Avatar" but there is no place to upload one and it is checked "do not show avatar" and it will not uncheck are you not able to have one with the free account anymore?
If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

You have to be a registered high bandwidth user (a paying user) to have an avatar.

What about the little subtitle under your username (eg. Cryptic has "Attorney at Law", Jolly has "Chick Magnet" etc.)? Do you have to be a high bandwidth user to have one of those, too?
