Hi guys!

Just signed up here at GT. Thought I would introduce myself.

I'm 36 and from St. Louis. I have a wife, son (17), and twin daughters (4).

I just recently got back into playing after about a 15 year hiatus. When I was in the Air Force, I dabbled with an Ibanez electric and Peavey amp. Most of my friends (who were really good) only wanted to play metal. Lots of power chords etc. I didn't care much for that style of playing so it ended after about 3 years when I met my current wife. :)

I've always wanted to get back to guitar since those days and the internet has provided me with a valuable resource when my guitar friends are not available.

Anyway, I picked up a nice Alvarez AD60S solid top with the Elixir strings, and I've been doing nothing but playing the blues scales to build up my strenght, picking technique, and toughen my fingers. I got a nice price too, 180 out the door for it, brand new.

I look forward to hanging out here. What a cool site. As a web community founder myself (photochimps.com), over 1 million hits a month. I know something like this can't be easy to pull off.

I'm also a software engineer (Java) so if anyone needs help or has any ideas, just give me a yell.

Again, thanks for such a great site to learn on.

Matt

Greetings Earth being. I welcome you to this dimension of guitar playing. Here we talk about guitar, only guitar, and nothing but guitar and you shall see that when reading our threads and seeing how well they stay on topic.

Wow, my first post made it nearly an entire page before it went completely off topic. That was fast. Hilarious, but fast. Thanks for the warm welcome! I look forward to learning allot and asking a ton of questions.

Here's my first one. Do you guys recommend me getting some formal instruction at least for the first month or two? I'm not opposed to it, however, I have read the Hal Leonard 1 and 2 and my fundamentals (posture, fingering, and picking seem to be correct), according to those books.

Man, I tell ya, I am not doing this Alvarez any justice. It's 'a whole bunch of guitar' for my meager skills. hahahahaha

An instructor isn't a bad idea at all. I took one up for a while myself. I learned quite a bit. Nothing you can't learn here on your own but just a little bit quicker.

I've already learned a couple of the easy licks from this site. Pretty Woman and Birthday by the Beatles. What a killer site. I've also learned exactly where all the notes are on the fretboard from this killer place!

I'm glad you think it's a good deal on the guitar. I thought it was too after doing all of my research. A brand new solid top for less than 200 bucks. Heck, they are still going on musiciansfriend.com for 279-299. :)

At least I can't blame any bad playing on the guitar. haha
