Anyone interested in Death Metal should read the book "Choosing Death" sometime. It's an interesting perspective on the beginnings of death metal and the bands that were involved.
My choices fall into the Extreme Metal category.
Nasum, Agorpahobic Nosebleed, Pig Destroyer, Mastodon and Strapping Young Lad

Just wondering if anyone else here has heard "Thresholds" by Nocturnus? Think of it as a death metal version of Dream Theatre crossed with a more restrained and focused Yngwie Malmsteen. It's probably the only realy heavy cd I would recommend any fan of the genre to buy immediatly. "The Key" made more of a splash at the time because of the extreme speed and childish controversial lyrics but it suck ass compared to "Thresholds" when it comes to composition, production and overall ability. I can't believe I am the only person I know of who has heard this cd!

Found a link with some Nocturnus clips from Thresholds...

Forget the first track, stupid Lovecraftian demon summoning malarky... as per usual, the best bits are not represented on these clips but they give you an idea of what the rest of the album is like (a hell of a lot better than these samples!).

Actually one of my favorite metal bands has always been Deadhorse, a somewhat unheard of band from around here in Houston. They certainly never "made" it, and broke up eventually in mid-90's...but they had a few indie label albums. Not sure on the catagory either: a 'lil death, satire, humor, intensity, fast and slow with some definite Texan flavor!

Or a good conversation with some of my friends will get you there just as easily. Anyway, I have heard good things about that book, I'd like to get it and read it myself... sooner or later.
