Nylon Stringed Acoustic

If I strum a nylon stringed acoustic with a pick, will it damage the strings? Is there any advantage (except for a narrower fretboard) of a steel stringed acoustic over a nylon stringed one?

As long as you don't abuse them your strings should be fine. I think steel strings sound way better than nylon strings and are easier to work with overall.
