I am learning to play slide too,
the one thing i know is very difficult to play slide in standard tuning if you are a starter, try different tunings
it would be much easier too learn

if you still dont want to change the tuning of your guitar
here is a good idea,
play any blues licks you know, and learn some more, using slide instead of bending, thats what i am doing now,
instead of bending from one note to another i slide, i put the slide on my pinky so i can use the other fingers to play the licks like i used to

Like the Blues man says, it's pretty much impossible for a beginner to play any decent slide in standard tuning.
Tune to an open E chord. EBEG#BE
It's a pain in the ass to tune to this, I know, but just try it out.
