I tried and tried to play slap bass for about a week and never got anywhere with it.

Then one day a few months later, I randomly tried it and was doing it fine.

I think it's largely a comfort thing -- I can play fingerstyle on almost any bass you hand me, no matter how poorly set up it is, but if I'm going to play slap, it had better have certain action and a certain neck feel and a certain string spacing.

As much as I love my Peavey Grind, the "scoop" they routed into the lower horn messes up my slapping (well, more specifically, popping) like you have no idea. Rather than playing more towards the neck like I do on all my other basses, I have to slap on that one over the pickup; otherwise I end up grossly over attacking and I hook my finger(s) under the strings.
