Firewire or Usb?
I recently bought a laptop and would like to record on it. I 'm going to buy an audio interface but I can't decide between the m-audio usb mobile pre and the m-audio firewire solo. I'm on a tight budget , that's why my choice went on those two devices. Does anyone know which one is better or has any experience with those interfaces? Thank you!

Firewire is much faster than USB1, USB2 is faster than firewire,
I use two daisy chained firewire inputs (MOTU 828 mk IIs) giving me up to 40 simultaneous ins @ 24/48 or 20 at 24/96.
No bandwidth problems !

sounds like a plan to me, I have never had a problem with M-audio.
If you can (and if you haven't already) you might want to think about some flat response, near-field monitors (speakers). Even really cheap one represent a huge bang for your buck and will give you a huge improvement over computer-speakers or even expensive headphones.

Take a look at the Black Box by M-Audio. It's a guitar and Mic interface.
Got one. Its good.

I think Firewire is more stable than USB. I currently record using USB and I have had problems where my PC drops the connection or the audio suddenly isn't full duplex. Reboot then everything works fine, but who wants to go through all that. I just finished putting a fresh 80 gig hard drive in so maybe that will help my problem but I really want to go to firewire. I think the Alesis MulitMix Firewire mixers look good but I don't know much about them.
I am a constant evolving music machine. Oh Man, I just forgot what I was playing. Oh well, on to the next song.

I have both USB and firewire. ProTools and Sonar recommend firewire. My firewire always chokes and my usb is pretty reliable. Hope that helps.
