It either means they are not on a label or are on an Indie label. Independent labels for the most part just help out bands with distribution of the c.d.'s. All Indie labels work differently though, some just provide a band with a name of the label, some do distribution, and some even do like the major labels and finance recording, touring, etc.....but few Indie labels do that much.

People are starting to refer to it as a genre because of how many Independant artists gain popularity. "Indie" bands also seem to have alot in common, simple, basic songwriting, less than stellar production. It's part of the "Indie" sound.
