He hasn't always just shredded the pentatonic. I mean, okay, he always uses the pentatonic lol, but on "Reload" and "The Black Album", his soloing is quite tuneful and tasteful, and goes beyond just attacking at high speed (unlike "Kill 'em All", where he just shows off).
