why am i so shocking at using a pick, even my 8 yr old girl is better.
my thumb seems adequate for all purposes, picking, arpeggios, strumming, so why do i need a pick, and how can i get better, dont just say practice either thanks.

You don't need a pick. But they are useful when playing faster than you can with your fingers, and for getting different tones and attacks. Just try differnt grips and find the one thats right for you...or you could ask your 8 year old ;)

my advice is, if it feels right to you, then keep it. why fix something that's not broken? hey, look at stevie ray vaughan. man you should see him work those fingers. like playing classical guitar on an electric. im saying, if it worked for stevie, you may be the same as him, dont need no pick. know what im sayin?

heck, sometimes i like not playing with a pick just so i can do tapping licks easier, etc. but trust me, it hurts to finger pick when you try doing anything hard and fast.
so you dont NEED a pick. if playing without one suits your style, roll with it! :D
