Waitresses here get $2.14 an hour. I always felt bad for 'em on the slow days.

Well, I still don't like tipping.

...and do ya think it'd be too much to ask, when I order lobster... to be able to go back into the kitchen and taunt the thing a little before it's dropped into the boiling water.
I mean, I'm spending all that money, you'd think I'd at least get to torture it first or something.

I typically give out about a dollar. That's always reasonable... unless the service is really bad.

I'll tip if the lady if it looks like she's got kids to feed and bills to pay. I won't give my money to some teenager who is going to take my money and blow it all on hats.

jeez, you guys are mean! at my job, I'm not allowed to accept tips, but when I'm offered, I take them.. ha ha. but seriously, I feel I have earned them. especially when it's a rainy day, and I have to help this person in a wheel chair out to their car, and they parked at the extremely far end of the lot, and I keep a smile on the whole time, I always wish them a good day, etc. etc. and I'm making $7.50/hour... whereas the checkers who just stand in one spot, they never have to go outside, they actually have to deal with customers even less then I do, all they do is beep the items across the scanner thing for me to bag, then take the money and give back change... that's all they do... and make $19/hour!!!! it just doesn't seem fair that they make way more for doing an easier job. I would be a checker but you have to be 18 to do it... grrr..

btw, dude, you can't pump you're own gas? it's not that hard. what I do is pull up, look what pump number I'm at, walk in give them $20 and say "can I get get $20 on pump ##" then you go out, select whether you want unleaded, premium, or super, then pull the thing off, and stick it in the tank.. it'll stop filling when it gets to $20... no going one cent over (in fact, in my civic, filling the tank usually only ends up being like $17 or $18) then you go in, get your receipt and any change that may be due. and leave.. simple!

you start out at $8/hour as a checker, with an extra $.50/hour for working in the morning (I think they consider this before noon) and an extra $.50/hour for working in the evening (I think they consider this after 6pm) and an extra $1/hour for working on sundays. then you get a raise every 520 total hours that you've worked. eventually topping out at $19/hour.

for me, I start out at $7.50/hour.. I make nothing extra for nights, I make nothing extra for sundays (and they always schedule me on sundays) I do make an extra $.50/hour for working morning though. and I only get a $.25/hour raise for every 520 total hours worked... eventually topping out at $8.395/hour. not only that, but they take a huge ammount of your paycheck to pay for disability taxes. I'm paying a higher percantage of my paycheck in federal disability taxes then my dad is... and he's working for a government laboratory, making close to 6 figures a year.

Oh yeah they'll ream you on Social Security and Medicare taxes. You just gotta hope you'll live to see it come back. Why don't you claim exempt. You really don't have to pay taxes until your 18. No taxation without representation! On your Income Taxes (coming soon) claim exempt and Uncle Sam will give you back everything he's taken. Kinda like a savings bond that matures right around the first of the year.

It's not being mean.
You're the one who took the job at the rate they're paying so why should I be the one to suffer for it. If you want more money, go find a different job instead of expecting hand outs. Smiling, doing your job in the rain, putting up with whatever... IS your job. You actually expect extra money from a disabled person because you didn't complain?

As far as pumping your own gas. Sure, it's not so hard for you.
But consider just 10 years ago (the last time I pumped my own gas), all you did was whip out of your car, flip a lever and start pumping. Watched the mechanical numbers roll by and inched it up to $20.01 or whatever.
Went inside, payed and left. Maybe 5 minutes tops. And it was understood that everybody squeezed an extra cent or two out of the pump.
It was just the way things were.

Now it's all digital displays that jump up by 3 cents at a time, buttons and keypads for multiple options, then you go inside (30 feet away from the pumps) and wait in line for the 5 people ahead of you who just shopped at the convenience store.
Then you get a guy who doesn't speak English who inists on the exact amount you pumped. You can't even talk to them cause they pretend they don't understand you.
I was there for at least 10 minutes or more.

Nah... I'll stick to full service.
Ya pull up...somebody else pumps the gas, cleans your windshield, checks your oil.
And it costs you the same or less than doing it yourself.
And I've never heard of anybody feeling like they had to tip for it.

As far as paying first... that's a new one on me.
If you go inside before pumping the gas, they're gonna look at you like you're nuts as far as I know. I've never heard of anybody doing that before.

Actually it's becoming quite the fad, especially at night since it prevents people from driving off without paying.

Holland Landing must be in some kind of chronosynclastic infundibulum. Everywhere else, it's a common option, and often the only way you can get your gas at night. That's been my experience in Ottawa, Toronto, and Calgary.

In every decent sized metropolis I've been to they usually make you prepay no other options. It sucks.
