Learn Minor and Major, then learn the different types of minor (jazz, melodic, harmonic), then learn the modes (Dorian, Phyrgian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Locrian), and Phyrgian dominant and/or the double harmonic scale.

Id say that (Minor/Major)pentatonic scales are awsome for the beginner!
They sound good at any speed and they are easy to play. :)

obviously you need to learn the major scale, cuz so many scales are based off of it, like all the 7 modes, learn all the modes, the blues scale(its fun improvising with it) pentatonic(if you like rock the minor pentitonic is an awesome scale to use) id say learn the mixo-blues scale, it has more of a chromatic sound to it

I guess it kind of depends on what you wanna play. For any style the best thing to learn is your major and minor pentatonic scales up and down the neck especially if you wanna play lead. For metal i would learn your minor scales first(harmonic, melodic). For blues lkearn major and your blues scale which is basically two notes added on to the pentatonic scale. Once you learn your majors and your minors, learn arpeggios first....get familiar with those cause those are generally what you use when you play.

Would you folks say not knowing scales is detrimental to my guitar progress? Because even when I was taking guitar lessons, not a lot of time was spent on scales. I have a guitar world magazine that talks about the modes, and when I got it, I spent some time figuring them out and practicing them. I think I'd probably forget most scales anyway the second I stopped practicing them. The way I see it, scales would only come in handy when improvising, and while I'm not very good at improvising, I can usually figure out what fret the note I want to play is at before I play it. Do you guys think scales are really that important? Should I start practicing them?

Scales are ridiculusly important. Even if you don't play lead!! With a scale you can use your chord construction theory to make any number of valuable chords. If you play lead you absolutly need scales. Scales are what like 70% of what guitar playing is all about. Learn your scales. As many as possible.

I have all the pentatonic "boxes" shown on a 22-fret guitar neck, for all keys, in an Excel spreadsheets. It is an excellent tool when pracaticing.

If you would like me to email them to you, let me know.

I think you should start with the pentatonic and blues scales... And the next step is major and minor scales... Also use your time to find out how to derive pentatonic scales from major and minor scales.

Maybe you can take a look at:

I agree with learning the Major and Minor scales, all forms of the minor scales. Harmonic..Melodic..etc.. It would be benificial in learning the Diminished Scale and I would also practice the Chromatic scale. I would also have an understanding of the Diatonic Harmonies. For example I would record this Diatonic Progression and play the scales across them as they go by. I..ii..iii.IV..V..vi.vii(Half Dim) Which equals out to be in the key of C
C(Major) D(minor) E(minor) F(Major) G(Dominant) A(minor) B(Half Diminished)
I think this would get you set up for learning and understanding the modes.
I feel this helps you get a better feel and ear development also, when you can hear the scales played across a chord progression, I hope in some small way this is helpful to you!!
