Just keep playing. They'll harden up. I go through the same thing all the time.
I get so wrapped up in recording other instruments that the guitar gets put aside for a couple of weeks. Then it's time to play again and it hurts like hell for a few days.
Once you get playing again you'll start noticing skin peeling away on your fingertips cause you shredded em up... you pick it off and it heals and hardens underneath causing callouses... a week later you can tap your fingers on a table and they make a clicking sound.
Do a ton of bends and slides, that'll get em whipped up pretty good.

I've done this too...although that was to remove the fingerprints... ;)

Like schmange and Edm say, it's just a case of keeping playing and removing the skin as it flakes, it'll soon harden up again. Filing can work, but I'd recommend you wait until they have hardened up a bit and you can't actually feel much on the tips; guitar's painful enough without inflicting more pain on yourself!

On a side note, I do love that "thunk" you get from those fingers on table tops...
Don't worry too much about me, ignore me long enough and I'll go away.

I should have been a bit more clear I went away 6 week ago the rest of my fingers are fine and done exactly what you have mensioned with the flakey skin and stuff. my fingers arn't sore its just my index finger won't harden which is now 6 weeks on. someone told me to put my fingers in viniger 10 minutes before I play each day for 1 week . Has anybody tried this. Its bad enough when you fingers smell of fish I don't think I fancey viniger. hehe
