About 50% of my time is spent on publicity and pushing my stuff.
First thing is put together a web page. Like I keep telling these guys here, putting your stuff on SoundScan or whatever is useless and just makes you look amateurish. Sign up with an ISP and design a page: even if it looks like crap like mine http://www.schmange.com at least it shows that you're serious about what you do.
Sign on with SonicBids and do an EPK.

Forget about their stupid contests and the contacts they give you cause they're just about making money for themselves. Just add it to your signature at the bottom of every email you send.

Contact all the places that license material for commercial use like Primary Elements: http://www.PrimaryElements.com
... but be totally sure that your stuff is of broadcast quality.
Sign up with places like Versus Media who do stuff like student films etc... but occasionally the major advertisers use their services to find material.

Look for the paying gigs but also keep in mind that these guys are the future film makers and if they like your stuff, you'll get a call for more stuff when they're doing a major commercial or whatever.
When you see something they're looking for, write them for more info, get to know them and suprise the crap outa them by writing a tune in a coupla days and sending it along. As well as a few different alternate mixes.
Then make sure they know you can do custom mixes on demand. (for more money of course :)
