how do i replace a broken string? please help!!

I just started to play and i was strumming to hard one day and broke my guitar string. I have no clue in hell on how to fix it :confused: can somebody please help me.

what type of guitar is it?, the string needs replacing, most people here would recomend replacing them all at the same time.

you should go to your local guitar store and ask them to show you, you'd need to go there anyways to get a new pack. you should repace your strings every month or 2

Depends on what type of guitar you have.
You insert the strings in the front for some guitars, or in the back for others.
If you do buy a new set, keep the old strings in case you break another. That will help you until you buy another set of strings.

my guitar string broke the first day i bought my guitar, it was a pain but i searched online and found this site which was helpful. I do not own a Markley, but this should give you some guidelines with pictures

Yea, i've never learned how to restring, i have an SG do i just take the strings through the bridge up to the tuning places? then tightening them? then cut the wires with pliers?

okay. look on the back of your guitar. if it has like something with holes that has screws on it, you should unscrew that carefully and then loosen the strings till they come off and pull them from the back. you might need a wire cutter to cut the ends of it so itll go through. if you do not with to remove strings but just replace them, then remove the broken string if you havent done so and insert the proper string thrugh the back. the strings go like this for a right hander if he/she was holding the guitar properly:

make sure you replace the strings with the proper string. on all the string sets i buy there is a letter and a gauge number next to it. you dont really have to pay attention to the gauge but make sure you're replacing with the proper letter. when you're done, tighten the string and screw back the thing on the back of the guitar.

if your guitar doesnt have that thing on the back then you have to replace the strings a different way and i dont know how to do it that way cause ive never owned a guitar that doesnt insert strings at the back. hope that helps. all fender or like electric guitars are like this.

I just busted one the other day and I just restrang, strung, w/e, 3 weeks ago. WTF?! Im gonna put good strings on it now. Any brand recomendations?

whoo... well, first of all, it would be helpful to know whether you have an acoustic or an electric. as the restringing process is a bit different. it would also be helpful to know what kind of bridge your guitar has, so if you could tell us what the brand and model of your guitar is, then we could help you better. if you don't know the brand/model, a picture would be nice.

but the best advice I can say has already been said, head down to your local music store (check the phone book and/or internet if you don't know where one is) and tell them that you are a beginner, you broke a string, you don't about the different brands and gauges of strings, and you don't know how to replace them. they will help you pick out a set of strings (after asking you what style of music you play, and maybe a couple other questions) and then they should show you how to put it on. if they don't or they want to charge you for it, I would leave and find a new music shop.

when I used ernie ball .009 gauge strings, they would break all the time... I moved up to .010 gauge GHS strings, they last a long time! they will all turn black and rust before they will break! also, the gibson brite wires that came stock on my SG lasted a pretty long time as well. I want to try D'Addarios for my next set, just cause I've never used them before.

Thanks 6strngs. I was already considering Gibsons. Whats the price on those? I might have them do it at the guitar shop if it isnt too expensive, just to make sure I dont mess it up.

the gibsons are a tad more expensive then most, but IMHO they give a better tone then the GHS strings I usually use.

there is a tutorial on this site on how to restring a guitar >here< which is the lesson I used to learn how to put on strings myself.

here's a tip I found to make strings last longer, after pulling it through the bridge, when it comes to putting the string through the hole on the tuning peg, wrap the string around the tuning peg 2-3 times before putting it through the hole. this has helped me increase the life of my strings tremendously! give it a shot!

Well, I restrung with light Elixirs today. Lets say it went less than well. When I restrung the first time it was easy. These things were bitchy and were crimping up. To tune it half the strings have to be turned one way and half have to turn the other. hahaha..... Yeah I royally messed it up somehow. Im gonna leave it for now and get a new set and have somebody show me the correct way. My guitar is playable again anyways, I was getting sick of playing the 5 string.

ha ha, yeah, my ibanez is a 5-string right now. I have extra sets of strings laying around, I just haven't gotten around to restringing it yet.

but when you say half need to be turned one way, and the other half the other, what do you mean? you mean you're headstock is a 3/3 tuning peg pattern, like gibson style? or what do you mean?

i mean 3 of the strings have to be turned one way to tune up and the others have to be turned the other way. I fixed one and ill fix the others later, just dont want to right now. i just could not manage to get these things tight on the pegs. they dont slip or anything but they look like crap.

Anyways, I fixed all of em, but it still doesnt look good. I tried getting em tighter but they just uncoil. Pisses me off, but hey it works and I can play so w/e.

yeah, I still don't quite understand what you mean. could you post a picture?

funny... to remove strings I just loosen them up and then take some wire cutters to them :p I don't see how that would help anything

thing is, is it a hard tail or a tremelo, coz if its a floyd then it very irritating to replace
