What is a Floyd Rose?

This probably being one of the stupidest question ever cuz i hear about floyd roses all the time and i know what they are but i just dont know how they are advantageous or what their general purpose is. heres a picture of one http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v710/rowashburn/CaptadoreseFloydRose.jpg I've heard the term tremlo bar thrown around to. Is a floyd rose a type of tremlo bar? yeah im really confused anyone have any answers.
