Hey I know that this is a very common question, and most people say It's up to opinion.

I've heard alot of their records and seen lots of videos of live performances.
And have been really impressed by SRV, but after watching Clapton's performances in last year's Crossroads guitar festival.(Layla, Jingo with Santana,Cocaine etc.)
I have been Extremely Impressed by Eric. And now I think he might be better.
I know a lot of people will disagree with me
But What do you Guys think?

I like them both equally; I think Clapton has more of a fan base outside of guitarists, and has been a part of some very influencial bands (Cream, The Yardbirds, Derek and The Dominoes) but I suspect (and I could be completely wrong in this) that a significant number of guitarists would prefer SRV, because of the song's he produced, as well as his guitar and vocal tone.

I think Stevie had a lot more to come before he sadly passed away; Clapton's "Unplugged" was released two years after SRV's death and is personally my favorite album of his and (in my humble opinion) is some of his best playing...

I think this is a much fairer question than, say, Hendrix vs. Cobain, given that they played "simliar styles", (I'm not saying they're the same genre, but both are classed as blues-players) but it's still hard to judge when one is still alive and producing some excellent albums, whilst the other has to be judged on material written over 15+ years ago...

Just my take...
Don't worry too much about me, ignore me long enough and I'll go away.

I really dont know, I love all of SRV's stuff, but also love Clapton's older stuff and the concert versions of his songs (so much better than whats on the album). They're both equal in my opinion.

Later in the evening
As you lie awake in bed
With the echoes from the amplifiers
Ringing in your head
You smoke the day's last cigarette
Rememb'rin' what she said

I get pissed-off when I'm being subjected to flash'n'trash 'virtuoso' B.S., so SRV loses some points there. But dayum!, when they reach deep inside for that special vibe, either one of them could raise the hairs on the back of my neck!

Both blues icons... both greatly skilled... the only argument that I can justify between the two is that EC came first.... But I have never seen someone play quite like Stevie... the emotion oozes out of him. Clapton can have moments like this... but Stevie can sustain it for an entire set. They both have great chops and both can build a mean groove... its really a toss up in my eyes. I have been listening to more Stevie lately though... and I am more inspired by his stuff... perhaps because the history of his life.... but either way... I would say Stevie gets my vote for now. Eric is obviously the more widely known and iconic though...

I've been a lifelong fan of Clapton but i've recently been getting into SRV (would you believe he's not that well known in the UK). I love them both - why do I have to choose?
